Manufacturing Engineering - Overview

Welcome to The University of Michigan , an internationally recognized center of excellence in manufacturing research and education.

At the College of Engineering , we offer the Master of Engineering in Manufacturing (M. Eng. in Mfg.) and the Doctor of Engineering in Manufacturing (D. Eng. in Mfg) degrees through InterPro . To be successful and effective, we believe the manufacturing engineer of the 21st century must be well-educated technically, yet knowledgeable and fluent in management tools and business. With its first-class engineering college recognized as a leader among engineering schools, and with one of the best business schools in the country, the University of Michigan is in a unique position to educate such engineers to become leaders of manufacturing enterprises in a global and increasingly competitive economy.

The M. Eng. in Mfg. degree and the D.Eng. in Mfg. degree involve a mix of engineering and business classes that prepares the student for a successful career in a global or national manufacturing enterprise. In Michigan, we take a wide view of manufacturing that spans product design and development, process design/improvement, factory-floor operational analysis and performance improvement, in-bound and out-bound logistics, and supply chain design.

Completing a team project in a manufacturing topic is one of the key requirements of the MEM degree.

Also, at the undergraduate level, a sequential bachelors/masters degree (BSE/M.Eng.) program is available. In five years, it is possible to get both the M. Eng. in Mfg. degree and a BS degree in engineering, through one of the following departments (only available for University of Michigan College of Engineering undergraduates):

Manufacturing research conducted at the University of Michigan includes a large variety of activities related to manufacturing equipment and processes, plant design and operations, and production system design, among other topics. We invite prospective students who are interested in research to visit departmental web sites in the College of Engineering to get a better understanding of the types of manufacturing research projects carried out in the College.
