Student Information

  • Keep the InterPro office updated on your current contact information. Also keep your contact information updated on Wolverine Access http://wolverineaccess.umich.edu.

Uniqname and Password

If you have matriculated, you will receive an email from the Graduate Professional Office with instructions on how to obtain your uniqname and password. You will use your Uniqname and Password to log into Wolverine Access to Register for classes, Update your address information, access your grades, access your UMICH email and a number of other things.

Student MCard

After you have your Uniqname and Password, you will need to take your picture ID (Driver's License) to the Entre Office to obtain your UM I.D. card (Mcard). You will receive your student identification card at the Entree office within 10-15 minutes. The Mcard including identification, library borrowing privileges, building access and meal plans and Entree Plus all on one card. All of the University community is required to have a valid Mcard. The eight digit UMID number printed on the front of each Mcard is the cardholder's University number (e.g., student number).

Registering for Classes

Students must register online through Wolverine Access; instructions are available at the Wolverine Access web site and from the InterPro office. Schedules and registration information are available on Wolverine Access before each term. Wolverine Access:

Most College of Engineering textbooks can be purchased in the North Campus Commons Bookstore or at the other bookstores listed below. Business School required textbooks can be purchased through local bookstores.

Computer Access, Computer Aided Engineering Network (CAEN)

Once you are registered for a class, you can find out about obtaining a CAEN Password at:

(Please note that this password is in addition to your ITCS/UMICH password.) The CAEN password will give you access to many computer labs across campus. Also, for your convenience, the InterPro-Student Area in 1500 HH Dow (mezzanine level) includes several computers for your use.

Information for International Students

Tuberculosis Screening
Beginning Fall 2006, certain entering international students must be screened for tuberculosis. Screening will be offered free on campus. See http://www.uhs.umich.edu/tbscreen or send an email to tbscreen@umich.edu for more information.
General Requirements
  • Must have a local address that is supplied to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and the International Center (IC).
  • Must have a valid I-20 end date
  • Must be registered on SEVIS
  • Must apply by March 1st if planning to participate in Curricular Practical Training
  • Requires a United States Social Security number.
  • Must apply 90 days prior to graduation if planning to particpate in Optional Practical Training.
Engineering Department Guidelines for International Graduate Students for Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
  1. The student must:
  2. The student is responsible:
    • To have an official offer letter from a company.
    • To identify a faculty member in the area of the CPT.
    • To ask the faculty member to approve the project and agree to read the report that is required at the end of each term in which the student is registered for CPT. (The report MUST be sent to InterPro, not faculty, for processing.)
    • To have the FACULTY sign the CPT Academic/Faculty Advisor Recommendation form http://internationalcenter.umich.edu/immig/forms/CPTreqadvisor.pdf.
    • To bring all forms and the offer letter to the InterPro office at 273B Chrysler Center (734)-763-0480 or gailcarr@umich.edu) for processing. Please allow at least 24 hours for processing.
    • Meet with a representative from the International Center . See #4 below.

    NOTE: The above criteria will apply to a non-paying, non-compensating internship as well.
    **NOTE: If the student is a PhD candidate, the student will be assessed the candidacy fee for the CPT.

  3. The InterPro office graduate advisor:
    • Will review the forms for correctness.
    • Will register the student for the CPT course. Following registration the student must check on Wolverine Access to see that the CPT course has been added to their transcript.
  4. Once the course is added to the transcript, the student must make an appointment with the International Center to complete the CPT paperwork. Bring all the items listed on the CPT Request Form http://www.umich.edu/~icenter/immig/forms/cptreqform.pdf to the meeting at the International Center. You can find out more about CPT at http://internationalcenter.umich.edu/immig/fvisa/f_cpt.html.

NOTE: A student who wishes to extend a current CPT into the following term must provide all new forms and an updated offer letter. The student will be assessed a fee. The international Center now assesses a mandatory $150 fee per service for a student submitting extension paperwork by proxy or for a student seeking to expedite the process within 5 business days.

Optional Practical Training (OPT) For Students In F-1 Status

OPT requests must be submitted 90 days prior to graduation.
